Rack Units (RU) Explained: Sizing an IDF Cabinet

A rack unit (RU, or just "U") is the standard vertical measurement for equipment in a 19-inch rack: 1U equals 1.75 inches (44.45 mm). When you size an IDF cabinet, you add up the RU height of everything that goes inside, then leave room to grow. Get the total right and your gear fits with breathing room; get it wrong and you either waste money on empty space or run out before the job is done.

What a Rack Unit Actually Measures

A rack unit only describes height. Width is fixed by the 19-inch rack standard, and depth depends on the cabinet and the equipment. So when a switch is listed as "1U" or a UPS as "2U," that number tells you how many 1.75-inch slots it occupies on the vertical rails.

Common cabinet sizes are described the same way. A 42U cabinet, for example, gives you 42 of those 1.75-inch increments to work with. That sounds like a lot until you start stacking real equipment.

Adding Up Your RU

Sizing a cabinet is mostly arithmetic. Walk through each category and total the RU:

Add those up and you have your "occupied" number. That's your starting point, not your cabinet size.

Leaving Room to Grow

The total you just calculated is what you need on day one. The cabinet you buy should be bigger.

A practical habit is to plan for the next phase, not just this one. New tenants, added drops, a second switch, a larger UPS, or a future fiber uplink all eat RU. Filling a cabinet to the top on installation day usually means a forklift upgrade later, which costs far more than buying a size up now.

There's a real cost to over-sizing too. A half-empty 42U cabinet takes floor space, costs more, and can complicate airflow and cable routing. The goal is a comfortable middle: enough headroom for realistic growth without paying for space you'll never use.

A Quick Worked Example

Say an IDF needs three 2U patch panels (6U), three 1U access switches (3U), three 1U cable managers (3U), a 2U UPS, and a 1U PDU. That's 15U occupied. Drop it into a 42U cabinet and you have ample growth room — possibly more than you need, in which case a smaller cabinet might serve. Squeeze it into a 24U cabinet and you've got working space today but little for tomorrow. Seeing the numbers side by side is what makes the decision obvious.

Where Cabinet Sizing Fits the Bigger Picture

RU math is one piece of a clean IDF. The same design also has to respect cabling distances — a channel tops out at 100 m (328 ft) with a permanent link limit of 90 m (295 ft) — along with pathway fill, bend radius, and power and cooling. The cabinet is where all of that lands, so getting its size right early keeps the rest of the design honest.
