How to Estimate Cable Footage From a Floor Plan (Without Underbidding)

To estimate cable footage from a floor plan, measure the real path each cable travels along corridors and pathways, then add vertical drops, service loops, and slack, and finish with a 10-15% waste factor. The straight-line distance between two points on a drawing is almost always shorter than the cable you will actually pull, which is the single most common reason bids come in low.

Why Straight-Line Measurements Underbid

Cable does not fly diagonally across a room. It runs in the ceiling along corridors, turns at right angles, follows cable tray or J-hook pathways, and drops down walls to outlets. If you scale a straight line from the telecom room to a faceplate, you are measuring a path the cable never takes. On a real job that gap can be 20-40% per run, and it compounds across hundreds of drops. Underbid the footage and you underbid the material, the labor, and the time.

Measure the Real Pathway Path

Trace the route the installer will actually follow:

This horizontal route is the backbone of your estimate. Keep one design limit in mind: the fixed horizontal run from the wall outlet to the patch panel must stay within the 90 m (295 ft) permanent link. The full channel, including patch and equipment cords, maxes out at 100 m (328 ft); the roughly 10 m (33 ft) difference is reserved for those cords. If a run is creeping toward 295 ft on the horizontal alone, flag it now rather than after the pull.

A quick media note: Cat6A supports 10GBASE-T to the full 100 m. Cat6 handles 1 Gig and PoE to 100 m, but for 10G over copper it is limited to roughly 37-55 m depending on the alien-crosstalk environment, so the shorter Cat6 figure only matters when 10G is on the table.

Add the Vertical Distances

Floor plans are flat, so the vertical cable is invisible until you add it by hand. For each drop, account for:

Service Loops and Slack

Leave slack at both ends. A service loop at the rack and at the outlet gives you room to re-terminate, move equipment, and dress cable cleanly. These few feet per run are easy to forget on a floor plan and painful to be short on in the field. Build them into the per-run number, not as an afterthought.

Apply a Waste Factor

After you sum horizontal, vertical, and slack, add a waste factor of roughly 10-15% (rough rule of thumb; adjust to the job). Waste covers miscuts, damaged ends, pull failures, and routing surprises that no drawing predicts. On a clean, repetitive job stay near 10%; on a congested retrofit lean toward 15%.

Estimating Labor

A common rough planning figure is about 11 hours of cabling labor per 1,000 ft. Treat that as a starting point, not a quote, it varies with ceiling access, pathway congestion, drop complexity, and crew experience. Use it to sanity-check a bid, then adjust for what you see on the plan.

Re-Measure on Every Revision

When the architect moves a wall, relocates the telecom room, or adds ten drops, your footage changes, and so does your labor and material. Re-measure on each revision rather than patching the old number. The fastest way to lose margin is to bid Rev A and build Rev C.

A note on standards: the figures above are general guidance and a design aid, not a substitute for the current published standard or review by a licensed RCDD or PE.
